In July 2012, Curry experienced a stroke, resulting in wheelchair use.
Following his film debut as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show in 1973, Curry established himself as a beloved household name with roles spanning stage and screen.
A recipient of a Daytime Emmy Award, Curry starred in hits like It, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and Muppet Treasure Island. However, health issues in the past decade have posed challenges for his performances.
Tim Curry Illness
In 2012, Tim suffered a severe stroke, compelling him to rely on a wheelchair. His representative informed The Hollywood Reporter in 2013 about the stroke’s impact, mentioning Tim’s positive progress in physical therapy and his enduring sense of humor.
By 2015, Tim seemed to have adapted to this significant life alteration.
Speaking to Los Angeles Magazine before the 19th annual Actors Fund Tony Awards Viewing Party, he expressed optimism about his recovery and involvement with the Actors Fund, hoping not to require its assistance.
At the event, Tim received a lifetime achievement award, which he regarded as a validation of the longstanding recognition and support from the American acting community.
He conveyed his gratitude for the honor and acknowledged the significance of the acknowledgment.
Effects of Stroke
The Stroke Association warns that “every stroke is unique,” with outcomes varying from minor effects to severe, long-term complications. Physical consequences may range from muscle weakness to paralysis or rigidity.
The organization further explains that nearly three-quarters of stroke survivors in the UK experience leg weakness, while over three-quarters face arm weakness, which can result in challenges with walking, arm movement, or grasping objects.
A stroke can also lead to persistent communication difficulties, including aphasia, dysarthria, and apraxia of speech.
Aphasia involves diminished speaking and comprehension abilities, potentially impacting reading and writing skills.
While aphasia is a common post-stroke issue, its manifestations vary among individuals.
Dysarthria occurs when there’s difficulty in controlling facial, oral, and throat muscles, leading to unclear speech, as emphasized by The Stroke Association.
Tim’s Life After Stroke
Despite losing mobility after the stroke, Tim’s passion for acting remains undiminished.
While he has reduced his public appearances due to being in a wheelchair, he still makes special appearances at select events and ceremonies.
Moreover, he has shifted his acting career primarily towards voice roles.
Since the stroke, Tim has contributed his voice to various projects such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ribbit, and Ben 10: Omniverse.
In October 2023, a fan, Michael Taeza, spotted Tim attending CreepieCon 2023. Interestingly, Michael Taeza is a cosplay artist known for portraying Pennywise.
